Multi-mode Controller Synthesis - A Refined Approach

Rajorshee Raha · 2019

Traditionally software-based control uses fixed task period. Since the last couple of years, adaptive sampling has gained significant attention in the research community because it promises better resource utilization while achieving a satisfactory level of control performance. In embedded control, a plant or system to be controlled does not always require the same attention under all states of the system; therefore the system can adaptively switch between fast and slow controllers depending upon the plant states or operating zones of the system. We lift this philosophy and in this paper propose an efficient mode selection framework compared to some of the existing ones [1], [2]. Our proposed approach selects the sampling modes based on the operational profile of the system and promises better saving compared to the existing similar approaches. We also offer a framework for bounding number of sampling modes required to optimize the resource savings. Further, we used anti-lock braking system as a running example and illustrated the promise of our proposed approach.
