Using computer graphics to find interesting properties in data

Abstract Mathematicians despise computer programmers who yield to the temptation of throwing silicon at a problem instead of understanding it. However, mathematicians have had to admit that their understanding of such mathematical topics as fractals and chaotic behaviour has advanced enormously under the illumination of computer simulation, especially by graphics (eg Peitgen and Richter, 1986[1]). The human eye has the ability to perceive significant patterns which take conventional algorithms a very long time to unearth.
