Is a 3-D image necessary to determine eye gaze?

This paper describes an experiment that was conducted to evaluate the ability to determine the eye gaze of a facial animation system. Subjects were asked to identify the direction of the eye gaze of a 3-D image, a 2-D image, and a human subject. Results indicate that, although there is no significant difference between determining the eye gaze of a 3-D image and a 2-D image, other factors, such as horizontal distance from the center of vision, have a major influence on the ability to accurately ascertain eye gaze.
