Reinvigorating a database systems course using web applications
Adam H. Villa · Journal of computing sciences in colleges · 2013
As both a student and teaching assistant, I have experienced the traditional approach to an introductory database systems course firsthand. I particularly enjoyed the course myself, however I noticed that a majority of students were unimpressed and even displeased with the class. I found that students had difficultly connecting with the topic and identifying the role that databases play in their everyday lives. This is mainly due to the fact that real world applications for databases are often presented at the end of a course. Students often do not realize the major role that databases have in many aspects of computing, especially in the web applications that they are using every day.
