Toward improving introductory programming student course success rates: experiences with a modified cohort model to student success sessions

Joseph V. Elarde · Journal of computing sciences in colleges · 2016

This paper describes our experiences with a series of process changes designed to improve CS1 student success rates. In response to experiencing failure rates in the range of 30-40% with a characteristic and typical bimodal distribution, we initiated a project to examine the root cause and develop corrective action processes to better serve our students. In this paper, we describe relevant background research; examine some of our performance data, and outline a set of process changes that have so far helped us improve our success rates. Future evolving plans will also be discussed.
