Incorporating leading-edge technologies in an artificial intelligence course
Bryson R. Payne · Journal of computing sciences in colleges · 2016
Artificial intelligence technologies have advanced significantly over the past several years, with new achievements making news virtually daily in the field of intelligent systems. Furthermore, a number of these technologies have been open-sourced or are otherwise available for educational and research use free or at very low cost. This paper presents an innovative artificial intelligence course approach using some of the latest AI technologies, from computer vision using Google's TensorFlow to natural language sentiment and intent parsing using NLTK and Mycroft Adapt, as well as IBM's Watson API, all at no cost to the institution or the students. Five programming projects in Python, plus a term project, are described in sufficient detail for other faculty to adapt and use these leading-edge AI technologies in their own courses.
