Active learning exercises for use in introductory programming courses
Keith J. Whittington · Journal of computing sciences in colleges · 2009
This session will demonstrate how to actively engage students in introductory programming courses. Successful adaptation of active learning requires more than just handing out materials and telling the students to talk, especially with freshmen students. Attendees will participate in a variety of activities to demonstrate how to effectively conduct activities, manage students, and synthesize active learning with lectures. The NSF has funded the presenter's work based on his initial success at increasing student satisfaction and academic success. Simple, discipline specific, and easy-to-use activities will be presented to allow the participants to start incorporating and creating active learning into their classroom.
