STEP is a new International Standard to exchange and represent product model data. It uses an object-flavoured data specification language to specify the representation of the data. This report describes how the STEP principles can be applied to product models in high energy physics research. We present the design and implementation of a program where STEP principles were applied to detector models used by the GEANT detector simulation package. The design and implementation of the program were carried out using object-oriented tecnology. Possible applications which can profit from this program are discussed briefly.
