Visual, interactive math on the web: bringing the abstract down to Earth

Kurt Cogswell · Journal of computing sciences in colleges · 2001

It is one of the contradictions of modern mathematics that simple concepts often require lengthy, highly abstract explanations. In some cases, visual/interactive Java applets can be used to replace these explanations with pictures and experimentation, thus bringing the concepts within reach of undergraduates and high school students. As a bonus, these visual explanations often result in stunning graphic images. The advantages this approach will be explored, using a Web course taught by the workshop presenter as source material.
