We address the problem of allocating channels in a hexagonal cellular network when device-to-device (D2D) communications are also present along with the usual cellular calls in the network. We formulate the channel allocation problem for this composite scenario of D2D and cellular communication in the network and find a lower bound on the required bandwidth in a 2-band buffering system in which interference does not extend beyond cells at distance two. Next we propose an elegant scheme for assigning channels and re-use them in the whole network in a systematic manner so as to satisfy homogeneous demands for the D2D communications as well as cellular calls. The assignment technique is very simple requiring O(n) computation time, n being the number of nodes in the network and needs a bandwidth marginally higher than the estimated lower bound.
