With the Internet and the increasing use of interactive web sites, databases have become almost ubiquitous. Although a well-planned design, implementation and testing are essential to the well being of the database, one of the most critical tasks that is often neglected is that of the administration of the database. Administration of a database in its widest sense, in addition to its creation, includes tasks such as maintenance, the management of users and the implementation of a diverse range of security mechanisms to prevent unauthorized access or intentional or unintentional damage to the data. Up to now, very few tools have been available to train professionals in this important and decisive aspect of database management. In this paper, the authors present their experiences in teaching computer science undergraduate and graduate students database administration while allowing the students to have hand-on experience using Personal Oracle 8iTM
