The appropriateness of competitive programming and the UVa online judge in the classroom: conference tutorial
Richard P. Simpson · Journal of computing sciences in colleges · 2017
This workshop will introduce the use of the UVa Online Judge to the audience. This website is an online automated judge for programming problems hosted by University of Valladolid in Spain. It contains over 4300 problems and is growing by the day. Problems can be submitted to this site in C, C++, Java, Pascal and Python. Since the problems range from very simple to extremely difficult a young computer science major can start with easy problems and slowly work their way up. Problems exist that require almost every data structure you have ever heard of with complexity of submitted solutions being a necessary consideration. I have been using this judge in the classroom and as a practice site for my programming teams for many years. From a personal perspective it has made me a better programmer and as a result I can help students debug their programs faster than I ever have before. In addition to all the above, students attack and study problems that are often given to them in interviews at high-end software companies such as Google and Microsoft.
