Complex image distortion using mathematical algorithms

Aimee Wolons · Journal of computing sciences in colleges · 2006

This application was developed during an independent study in Advanced C++: CSCI 299. The goal was to manipulate images to create pop art and distort them to create strange but esthetically pleasing results. The process began with reading and writing binary BMP files. Then the decision was made to begin by manipulating the colors. Through this concept there were alterations made to produce the negation of the image, as well as adjustments to the distribution of color. Next, we explored the possibility of distorting the basic fabric of the images while leaving the colors unchanged. This resulted in the alteration of the photograph's resolution as well as a fun-house mirror effect. Later we combined both methods resulting in many interesting images. People who have seen the work have uniformly expressed amazement that a computer could generate images that so closely resemble famous artwork. Plans for future development include expanding different structural alterations of the photographic images as well as altering the image sizes and possibly creating mosaic results.
