This paper attempts to address the need for the definition of measurable criteria towards a qualitative evaluation of Visual Programming Codes. It deals with the combination of various ways of building loops using messaging, by mapping them to the five levels of the SOLO taxonomy and by proposing an evaluation tool for the visual programming code. This tool allows the teacher to have measurable data on the degree of the maturity of a student’s code that builds loops using messages. The teacher may use these criteria to make estimates of the student’s understanding of the various factors involved, such as whether the loop is terminated, whether it is nested, whether the loop is executed serially or in parallel, whether it uses a variety of repetition techniques and whether there are cross-loops.
