Sigma Shift Keying (SSK): Optimized Detector with Increased Data Rate

Martin Kramer · 2018 2nd European Conference on Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS) · 2018

An optimized detector is introduced with increased data rates for a new modulation technique called Sigma Shift Keying (SSK). Minimal transmit power output and very low probability of intercept (POI) are the advantages of SSK. Standard deviations of zero mean Gaussian noise signals are being digitally modulated instead of shift keying of sinusoidal carrier signals. SSK demodulation with increased bit rates and low bit error rates requires the development of a new detection method. A non-linearity followed by an event counter handle this issue. A theoretical analysis and calculation of optimal detection thresholds for high performance are derived. Bit error curves will be shown for typical applications.
