Wireless Sensor network is the combination of wireless communication, Micro Electro Mechanical Systems (MEMS) and digital electronics which together adds up to the feasible development and design of multi-feature and multi-functional sensor nodes. Wireless Sensor networks follow the particular process of sending information from source to destination which is known as routing protocol. The performance of wireless sensor networks highly depends on the technique to provide route to the data based on IEEE 802.15.4 standard. Routing protocols have been categorized into much of the energy efficient and quality of service based design to yield better communication performances. This paper provides a performance analysis of two of the routing protocols: Mac based routing and Level based routing. Mac based routing protocol has been adopted as it exhibits the feature of collision avoidance and Level based routing protocol exhibits the feature of two way communications with introduction of Mac support approach. The analysis is done on the basis of certain performance metrics: delay, total energy consumption, average jitter, throughput, packet delivery ratio and packet loss. The received results depict that level based routing has proved to be better than compared to Mac based routing.
