The basic theory of induced representations is treated, for finite groups and for locally compact second countable groups. In connection with this subject the concept of imprimitivity is-discussed, with an application to the notion of localizability in quantum mechanics. Finally, we demonstrate how to use induction and imprimitivity to find complete families of irreducible unitary representations of regular semidirect products by an abelian subgroup. An important example, the continuous Poincare group, is also presented.
