In Digital Electronics, the Finite State Machine -Data-path model (FSM-D) is a general-purpose architectural model, which supports the structured approach in designing digital hardware. The FSM-D model is composed of two blocks, the Finite State Machine (FSM) and the data-path. These two blocks participate in executing a task or algorithm assigned to the FSM-D. FSMs are used for designing complex digital circuits and are sometimes known as the control path. FSM is a model of behaviour composed of a finite number of states, transitions between those states, and actions. In the FSM-D architecture, the FSM handles the control of tasks. The data-path is used to execute calculation, manipulate data and transfer among registers. It consists of sequential circuits that are encapsulated by blocks. When a data-path is designed, it contains multiple blocks.
