Almost ordinary abelian varieties over finite fields

We provide a characterization of simple almost ordinary abelian varieties over finite fields (of odd characteristic) analogous to work of Deligne in the ordinary case, and work of Centeleghe–Stix in the case of abelian varieties over F p . We then use this characterization to provide lower bounds for the sizes of many almost ordinary isogeny classes.
