Spectrum paucity has motivated new wireless concepts for dynamic access to the unutilized wireless spectrum. Cognitive radio (CR) is a novel innovation in radio technology which senses spectrum scenario, access the idle/unused spectrum bands intelligently and has ability to adjust its transmission parameters in a flexible manner to share the spectrum. For implementing 5G vision, CR is very important. The objective of CR is to make optimum use of available spectrum frequency, improve scarcity of spectrum resources and improve the wireless networking. In present paper, the CR networks are discussed with respect to the spectrum sharing technologies, spectrum sharing models and challenges. An algorithm is proposed for energy efficient spectrum sharing.
