During the past decade, the transportation smart card system and its market has been developed and grown significantly. The essential infrastructure for the system has been implemented throughout the country. The authors can see there are several types of terminals or gates used in all forms of public transportation. Each terminal has its own operable transportation card. A key problem is that interoperability is not supported, either in transportation methods (e.g. bus, train, etc.), or in regional areas. The authors are required to develop a novel interoperable transportation smart card system, called the OCAP card (One Card All Pass in Korea) system based on the Korea Industry Standard. This paper proposes the purchase terminal, one of the components of the OCAP card system. The authors have designed and developed the purchase terminal which is able to recognize the existing regular card and the OCAP card with a standard PSAM inside. Through running a test-bed, the authors expect their proposed terminal could be used with a reasonable degree of certainty and reliability.
