In this paper, we propose a mathematical model that aims at prolonging the lifetime of sensor networks via an adaptive cluster head placement technique. We consider Transmit-Only (TO) sensor networks, where each group of sensor nodes directly communicate with their cluster head (CH) to report their sensed events. Our model makes use of the residual energy levels in the TO nodes and adapts the CH location accordingly such that it minimizes the energy consumption of the nodes with lowest residual energy. Using simulations, we show our approach can achieve up to a 50% improvement in lifetime compared to the static approach.
