Software Defined Networks (SDN) is the emerging network paradigm which devises the control plane of the communication from the data plane and makes the network design simpler & faster. It provides platform for network application development in a configurable way. Hence, SDN is implemented in many topologies to offer more competent configuration, greater performance, and higher flexibility to facilitate new network designs. SDN provides several features that allow for easy mitigation of certain types of attacks, such as Spoofing, Tampering, Denial of Services etc. It allows other types of attacks and also introduces new vulnerabilities that are not present in traditional networks. In this work, we have identified some of the security threats that are present in the SDN and initiated the Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attack in the SDN simulated environment followed by mitigation against that attack by adding flow rules to the SDN controller. Results proved that our flow rules can eliminate the DDos attacks in effective manner.
