Information Security of Smelter Automated Process Control System for Pulverized Coal Preparation

Владимир Арисович Гольцев, A.R. Bondin, S.Ya. Zhuravlev · 2019 International Russian Automation Conference (RusAutoCon) · 2019

The article deals with the Automated Process Control System (APCS) operation for the ferrous metallurgy most hazardous industrial facility - that of pulverized coal fuel preparation and feeding into blast furnaces. Major and the most vulnerable areas were detected for the pulverized coal fuel APCS; their use by an offender may cause irreversible effect. Besides, the probability of two most dangerous information security threats were reviewed, i.e. thermal influence on IT appliances (fire) for the information, circulating at the mid automation level - that of automatic control and malicious software implementation from user automatic work stations (through open ports for external machine readable media), external public communication networks and (or) international information exchange networks (in case of network computer attack). Two most hazardous scenarios were considered to determine possible damage extent caused by corruption and unavailability of information circulating in the pulverized coal fuel APCS which may result in routine operation disturbance or illegal interference with its functioning processes.
