In Mobile ad-hoc networks, virtual backbone construction on the basis of dominating set becomes popular approach to enhance broadcasting and routing activities. Almost all broadcasting schemes that are based on connected-dominating-set (CDS) require topology information related to the 1-hop or 2-hop neighborhood of each node, in addition to maintaining this information. To tackle these requirements an enhanced distance-based neighbor protocol (ENP) proposes and develops in this paper to collect and maintain 2-hop neighbor information within each node. To investigate ENP performance, it was implemented as the neighbor protocol for an established connected-dominating-set and both of them were integrated with AODV routing protocol. ENP performance was compared with the original distance based-protocol that used by CDS and with the periodic approach that used by AODV. In addition, ENP was compared with another event-based neighbor protocol. The simulation results were showed that ENP outperforms its competitors in terms of maintenance overhead and number of times the links broke. All simulation were carried out with QualNet v5.02. The proposed protocol makes preemption in utilizing of Multicriteria decision making (MCDM) algorithm to select the most optimum threshold values that compromise between multiple conflicting parameters.
