There are a number of serious concerns over wireless sensor networks (WSNs) which limit their universal appeal. Conserving energy is one of the primary concerns. Optimizing energy is performed based on protocols responsible for the operation order, such as clustering and selecting cluster heads. The Low Energy Adaptive Clustering Hierarchy (LEACH) protocol is most common and can be combined with Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithm for performance improvements. This paper begins with a discussion over the current methods of optimization, such as the modified LEACH protocols. Next, several simulations are performed to differentiate LEACH on its own compared to LEACH combined with PSO. These simulations determine how many dead nodes are present when the runs are completed for the purpose of noting how well they conserve energy. In the experiments, LEACH with PSO had better performances than LEACH alone. This reveals a potential method for limiting dead nodes and increasing energy use and the networks' lifespan.
