A Review of Usage-based Account of Linguistic Knowledge

Langacker subsumed under theUsage-based Modela number of function-oriented linguistic practices in recent decades,e.g.,functional-typological approach,sociolinguistics,grammaticalization study,corpus linguistics.The usage-based view of language maintains that based on physiological prerequisites and cognitive abilities,linguistic knowledge is constructed as the result of usage,that linguistic inventory is comprised of symbolic structures that vary in complexity and schematicity,that the symbolic structures are all pairings of form and meaning,which emerge from usage and constitute nodes of a connectionist network,and that lexicon and grammar form a conti-nuum,as the borderline between linguistic categories is often hard to delineate.
