Poster Abstract: On the Feasibility of Event-Driven Network Automation Scenarios for BGP
Elkin Aguas, Thomas Green, Anthony Lambert · 2019
Recent developments in orchestration and device-to-device APIs have made Event-Driven Network Automation (i.e., automatic responses to events based on predefined scenarios) more feasible. This new paradigm allows transitioning from prone-to-error, time consuming, manual manipulations to fast and refined automated responses in areas such as network security or management. This paper investigates the feasibility of automating two scenarios for day-to-day realistic BGP events, namely BGP hijacking and load balancing. First, we present an open-source, vendor-agnostic platform capable of performing automated responses to such events. Second, we implement the two aforementioned scenarios and evaluate the performance and scalability of the overall solution. Results suggest that such an approach is suitable for practical use.
