The Practice and Perception of Web Archiving in Academic Libraries and Archives

Lisa Gregory · Carolina Digital Repository (University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill) · 2019

The objective of this research is to try to gain a fuller picture of Web archiving activities in libraries and archives at institutions of higher education in the United States, and the perceptions librarians and archivists have of those activities. A Web-based self-administered survey was sent to multiple listservs, and 239 respondents completed the survey. At the time of this survey, many higher education institutions had not implemented routine Web archiving activities. Although planning and testing was being carried out, these were still in the early stages. The results of this survey reveal that archivists and librarians believe Web sites should be archived, and that cost, support for technology, and lack of trained personnel are some of the factors prohibiting them from doing so.
