On Z/sub 4/- and Z/sub 9/-linear lifts of the Golay codes

In this paper we investigate Z/sub 4/-linear and Z/sub 9/-linear lifts of the extended binary and ternary Golay codes. We introduce weight functions on Z/sub 4/ and Z/sub 9/ which reflect previously unknown error-correcting and packing capabilities of these codes. We compare their properties with those of the Hamming, Lee and homogeneous weights and give algebraic decoding schemes using a general decoder.
