Using local variance, Allan- and Hadamard variances in speech analysis – Pitch analysis

We introduce the use of local standard variance/deviation and local Allan- and Hadamard variances/deviations in assessing the quality of the speech for medical purposes. The distributions of the values of the local variances of the formants are exemplified. The limits in the use of these features due to noisy pitch detection are discussed. This is largely a methodological study, with one of the main questions answered being how the total and moving variances introduced in this study should be computed and how they compare with the jitter in pitch.
