Fuzzy Logic Based Automatic Contrast Enhancement of Weather Degraded Images

A fuzzy logic based automatic contrast enhancement (CE) technique for grayscale images is presented in this paper. The proposed method generates results comparable with the ones obtained by using advanced CE techniques with less computational effort, being suitable for effective hardware implementations, in order to meet the specific requirements raised by the real time applications. It is based on the automatic adjustment of the transformation function generated by a set of fuzzy rules, depending on the statistics of the original histogram. Intensive experiments were conducted using low contrast bad weather driving scenes to verify the performance of the proposed method. The obtained results recommend it as an effective alternative to other computationally complex CE techniques.
