The optimization of coverage for mobile wireless sensor networks has been analyzed presently, and various optimization algorithms arise in many researches. However, the issue of optimization on node distribution in wireless sensor networks has not been well solved, especially in low convergence efficiency of current firefly algorithm. To overcome this deficiency, a new deployment scheme based on improved firefly optimization algorithm is proposed. In our proposal, a novel updating method has been used, which replaces the location of two nodes at a time instead of updating every node location in traditional firefly algorithm. The improved scheme is devoted to move the nodes of the densest region quickly and rapidly reducing the density of the node distribution. Not only that, it makes the WSNs reaching the maximum coverage in the shortest time. The performance of the proposed algorithm is compared with the previous algorithms by simulations. The results show that the improved algorithm can achieve larger network coverage and get the better distribution of WSNs.
