Evaluation of Breast Lumps in Women Aged 18–40 Years

Background: Finding a breast lump can cause a lot of anxiety. Most breast lumps , particularly in younger women, are not caused by cancer. Aim of study: To identify the out-come of breast lumps in women aged 18–40 year. Patients and methods : A descriptive cross-sectional study conducted at the center of early detection of breast cancer, Elwiya maternity teaching hospital from the first of June 2015 to the end of December 2015, seventy-five patients with breast lamps were included. Results: M ean age 29 years, (69.3%) of the patients had mass in the breast as a chief complaint, 13.3% had pain in the nipples and areola and only 8% had nipple discharge (greenish discharge and galactorrhoea). Most of the lumps 43 (57.33%), were in the upper lateral quadrant of the breast. Accuracy of ultrasound 80%, sensitivity 100% while the specificity is 57%. S ensitivity of cytological examination 70% and specificity 100%. Histopathology revealed ten (13.2%) patients as having malignant tumor. Conclusion: The most common type of benign breast tumor was fibroadenoma, while invasive ductal carcinoma was the malignant type.
