Current Challenges and Future Perspectives

Ranjusha Rajagopalan, Lei Zhang · 2019

In spite of the advancement in cathode and anode materials, there remain numerous challenges, including cell design, understanding of fundamental electrochemical mechanism, poor initial Coulombic efficiency, electrode mass balancing, functional full-cell fabrication, etc., in the field of sodium ion batteries (SIBs), that obstructing the practical application. Also, the bulky size and the lower potential of sodium adversely affect the stability and energy of the SIBs. Thus, it is necessary to understand the underlying problems and at the same time the potential advantageous of the SIBs, to bring this potential system to the market. This chapter discusses the current challenges in various fields and recommends some future directions for SIBs; this could provide significant insights into fundamental and practical issues in the progress of SIBs.
