The fingerprint has been a source of unique identification for adults. The tremendous progress in the domain of fingerprint capture for children as young as a few hours has promised a life time of identity to every child starting from his birth. The objective of our research is to build a scalable device using ubiquitous components including a cell phone, which captures a high contrast ridge-trough image which has sufficient fidelity to identify a child. The present fingerprint recognition systems are tailored for adult fingerprints, and in order to make them suitable for fingerprints of children, we calculate different scaling factors for children between 0-3 years with which we are able to match a fingerprint with high accuracy using existing systems for adults.
