Ambidexterity in Age of Asset-Sharing: Development of Dynamic Capabilities in Open Source Ecosystems

Parisa Haim Faridian, Donald O. Neubaum · Academy of Management Proceedings · 2019

The rise and popularity of ventures built around innovation networks suggests the importance of inter-organizational relationships in developing capabilities central to creating and capturing value. In this paper, we argue that exploration- and exploitation- oriented network ties are conducive to achieving ambidexterity, as they improve asset positions of entrepreneurial and intrapreneurial capabilities. To do so, we integrate dynamic capabilities prespective with a network-based open innovation perspective to highlight implications of embeddedness for value creation and value capturing strategies in new ventures and established organizations. The resulting model is discussed using open source ecosystem as a context that exemplifies the complexities of the symbiotic relationships among its actors. This paper makes a number of contributions. First, we extend the current scope of the dynamic capabilities literature by integrating a network perspective to explicate implications of co-creations and co-capturing of value. Second, we address the complexities associated with IP rights for different forms of network ties. Finally, we link dynamic capabilities literature with ambidexterity research by offering insights on how resource-sharing facilitates the simultaneous development of capabilities related to both exploration and exploitation in dynamic environments.
