The projective symplectic geometry of higher order variational problems: Minimality conditions

We associate curves of isotropic, Lagrangian and coisotropic subspaces to higher order, one parameter variational problems. Minimality and conjugacy properties of extremals are describedin terms self-intersections of these curves.
