The Internet of Things (IoT) is shifting data and decisions to near real time while also integrating a number of devices for exchange of data with a profound impact on lifestyles and business functions. However, multiple integration open points also result in security risks for unauthorized access. Traditional cryptographic solutions require a lot of compute power, which may not be possible in the realm of the IoT devices. IPV6 has been defined as the de facto standard for communication between billions of devices for smart objects in the IoT, which involve bidirectional flow of information. Energy efficiency is important as most of the devices are battery powered. With proliferation of devices and the adoption of untested use cases, the risks of storing data that can be used for prediction has brought in privacy issues as the IoT devices double up as trackers of humans and objects. This chapter provides an overview of the security challenges in adopting the IoT along with data privacy issues while storing IoT data. Apart from security, privacy is a key component of the IoT networks and organizations should use a proper assessment of privacy using a privacy impact framework to identify the privacy challenges associated with the IoT adoption.
