Design Aspects of Fuzzy Systems and Fuzzy Logic Applications

Kinattingal Sundareswaran · 2019

This chapter focuses on various methods of design of a fuzzy logic–based system. A fuzzy logic system is adaptive to plants that exhibit parameter variation and non-linearity. Fuzzy logic concepts can be employed to arrive at a suitable decision by incorporating an individual’s perception about alternative options and their constraints as simple fuzzy sets. The major advantage of fuzzy logic is that fuzzy rules in natural terms can be easily derived from an expert. Existing knowledge can be readily expressed in linguistic form and a fuzzy logic system can be constructed. The fuzzy logic system can then be activated for numerous inputs and corresponding outputs can be determined. There are a number of ways in which genetic algorithm (GA) and fuzzy logic can be integrated. The most common approach is to use a GA to optimise the performance of a fuzzy system. An alternative approach is to use fuzzy logic techniques to improve the performance of the GA.
