Hidden changes: From CCTV to ‘smart’ video surveillance
Danielle Dawson · 2013
In 2005, a survey 1 found that an astonishing 90 per cent of Spain’s population (based on a sample of 1,200) felt that video surveillance in airports, stations and public transport was desirable. A separate survey in 2006 by the Globalization of Personal Data (GPD) project found that around 75 per cent of the sample Spanish population (based on 1,000 participants) believed that camera surveillance was effective in public places. On the face of it, both questions appear to refer to the same thing, so was this discrepancy in responses due to the broader question (‘public places’ rather than ‘transport sites’), or perhaps to the fact that in March 2004, 191 of Madrid’s train commuters died in a bomb attack and a further 1,800 injured?
