Cloud computing provides a myriad of services to its users through different internet based tools and techniques. The basis of cloud computing is a technology called Virtualization which acts as the concrete ground on which cloud computing stands. Virtualization facilitates the creation of numerous Virtual machines (VMs) or guest machines on a single host machine with the help of software called the hypervisor. The machine that contains the Hypervisor and on which virtual machines are made is called the host. In the lifecycle of a VM there may occur a need to transfer a VM from one host to another host because of different reasons like fault tolerance, energy saving, server consolidation, host maintenance etc. and this is called as Virtual Machine Migration (VMM). While migrating the VM from one host to another there are certain parameters like downtime, total migration time, amount of memory to be transferred etc. that effect the performance of VM and are to be taken care of for the optimization of VMM. In order to achieve the better resource utilization and to elevate the performance of migration process, the proposed research work uses the concept of ballooning and hybrid approach (i.e. is the amalgam of both precopy and post copy) of VM migration. The research paper also presents the comparative analysis of migration of Virtual machines between the hosts with ballooning and without ballooning in terms of migration time. The main objective of the paper is to decrease the total migration time and the amount of data to be moved to increase the performance of the virtual machine.
