An Acknowledgment Approach for Detection and Prevention of Packet Dropping Misbehavior in MANETs

Mobile Ad-hoc NETwork (MANET) is a network of mobile devices communicating via wireless links. It relies on the cooperation of participating nodes for packet forwarding and other network functions. But this cooperation consumes energy, CPU cycle, and memory of a participating node. A Selfish node may refuse to cooperate and drop the packets of other nodes, to save its own resources or a malicious node may drop the packets to disrupt the network function. Such selfish or malicious nodes are regarded as misbehaving nodes. In this paper we propose an acknowledgment based scheme THACK (Two Hop ACKnowledgment), to detect packet dropping due to misbehaving nodes and avoid these nodes to be chosen for path establishment. It is improved version of AACK scheme. This scheme is simulated using NS2 and results are compared with existing TWOACK and AACK schemes. The results show that THACK gives better performance. It shows visible improvement in Packet Delivery Ratio, Routing overhead and Average End to End Delay. Even for longer routes, our scheme performs much better than above two schemes.
