Delay Tolerant Network (DTN) is playing a pivotal role in the future human living areas, especially in the future development of smart cities. In the future smart cities, the available energy resources are very limited. In this condition, the intelligent transmission is required as soon as possible, to achieve the goal of saving energy resources. At present, most of the researches focus on optimizing the transmission unit or routing algorithm for prolonging the network life time. There is no good adaptive energy saving scheme according to urban environmental rules. In this paper, an energy protection mechanism under human encounter characteristics is proposed in terms of AESS (Adaptive Energy Saving Scheme based on geographic grid) approach, which can be applied to various DTN routing protocols such as Epidemic, Prophet, ADAF etc. According to the rules in the urban scenarios, nodes can sleep dynamically to save energy. Simulation results verify the performance of proposed AESS which is used in Epidemic, Prophet and ADAF , under an urban scenario, are better than the corresponding original algorithm in delivery ratio, network overhead ratio and energy consumption status.
