Effective Informal Methods

Gary A. Davis · 1996

As an ergonomics consultancy group, Davis Associates undertakes projects that often involve the evaluation or development of a user interface, be it a computerbased software product, or a product-based control/display interface (for convenience, these will be collectively termed &s;products&s;). However, we are quite often asked to contribute within short time-scales and tight budget constraints. We find ourselves having to accept these constraints because, if we did not, either the project would progress with no user-centred input at all, or, one of our competitors would be handed the work. This is the background to our application of informal methods for usability evaluation.
