Characterization of a quasistatic environment with a qubit

The problem of gaining information about a qubit's environment by a sequence of single-shot projective measurements applied to the qubit is analyzed in detail. The theory is applied to the case of NV centers, and it is found that recent results from the literature can be explained by classical concepts.
