Assessing and Improving the Software Development Process
Roger S. Pressman · 2017
The best way for software development managers to plan for the cultural changes that accompany the introduction of software engineering and computer-aided software engineering is to first conduct a process assessment. Such an assessment enables both managers and technical staff to better understand their software development strengths and weaknesses and to create a strategy to serve as a road map for technology transition. Managers and technical staff in most companies are all too anxious to make technical decisions—that is, to select new tools and then proceed quickly toward modern software engineering practice. The Software Engineering Institutehas developed a comprehensive assessment model that is predicated on a proposed set of software engineering capabilities that should be present as organizations reach different levels of process maturity. The Process Advisor assessment model has been designed to enable selfdirected assessment for those organizations that want to begin software engineering technology transition activities without incurring a substantial initial expense.
