M odern Languages for all: maximizing potential

W hen the term ‘Languages for All’ is used in connection with M odern Languages, attention tends to focus on those students for whom learning a foreign language is observed, or expected, to be problematical. In fact, we can assume that all students will experience difficulty at some point, and that even gifted students will encounter setbacks and challenges which at first seem daunting. For the purposes o f this chapter, however, the focus is on those students for w hom success in foreign lan guage learning is likely to be achieved only if the provision offered to them is appro priately planned and effectively handled.
