Have my smart lightbulbs been weaponized: introducing computer security issues related to IoT devices

David Zeichick · Journal of computing sciences in colleges · 2018

Projects based on current, real-world computer security issues stimulate student curiosity in the field. Incorporating hands on exercises into these projects enables students to conceptualize computer security concepts that are often theoretical. A current issue plaguing the industry is poorly designed, misconfigured Internet of Things (IoT) devices found in the home. To address this issue students created their own IoT device and analyzed the security implications of their design. This paper describes all aspects of this project and the outcomes.
