This chapter focuses on increasing the lifetime of a network by maintaining energy conservation within the entire network in which heterogeneous nodes are being used. A wireless sensor network (WSN) consists of many sensors in the network that communicate hop-by-hop to the sink node or base station. There are different protocols used in MAC layer for error control which can accommodate service differentiation by changing the persistency of transmission or strength of error control codes. Error resiliency of traffic belongs to a different priority of classes which can be controlled easily and thus can be used to provide quality of service (QoS) for traffic. Error control is needed for providing efficient and reliable delivery of packets within the network and can be used to optimize energy dissipation. There are various methods by which the MAC layer can contribute to QoS directly or indirectly. The chapter discusses properties of these mechanism and how they contribute to QoS.
